Complainant Name:
Mr Aurel Sercu

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Daily Express

Mr Aurel Sercu, on behalf of an amateur archaeology group called the Diggers, complained that an article was misleading in its description of the group, who survey the battlefields of WW1.

The newspaper published a clarification highlighting the distinction between the Diggers and unlicensed groups of battlefield scavengers. It made clear too that the group had never been criticised by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The newspaper had previously published an adjudication made by the Broadcasting Standards Commission against a TV programme in which the Diggers had appeared and which the article had reported on. This stated that there was no evidence for the claim made in the programme that the difficulty in identifying bodies the group came across in the course of their activities was their fault.
