Complainant Name:
Mr D Erskine

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Daily Telegraph

Complaint:
Mr D Erskine of Cheshire complained that the newspaper had inaccurately exaggerated the impact of the Chernobyl disaster, claiming that ‘about 5,000 people’ had died. The WHO’s figure is merely 45. He also provided evidence - referring in particular to the UNSCEAR Report 2000, which noted no evidence of radiation-related health effects other than the increase in (curable) thyroid cancers - to refute the newspaper's suggestion that 'up to 5 million people' suffered health problems due to the disaster.

Resolution:
The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published a correction on the first point.

Report: 63
