Complainant Name:
A woman

Clauses Noted: 1, 6

Publication: Daily Star

A woman complained that the newspaper had inaccurately suggested that her daughter had been bitten by a spider and rushed to hospital. Although a poisonous spider had been discovered in the family home, the daughter was never bitten. The complainant also objected to the fact that her daughter was named in the story.

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper, having offered to publish a correction and apology, sent at the complainants request a personal letter of apology to the complainants daughter, although it maintained that the news agency which supplied it were given permission to use her name.
