Mrs Peggy W Adams of Sporle complained that an article was inaccurate in stating that the author Elizabeth Gaskell had ‘ended her days living in Rome with a younger lover’.

The newspaper explained that the question of whether Mrs Gaskell had a young lover in Rome was a matter of academic debate. However, it acknowledged that she had, in fact, spent her final years in England and had died in Hampshire – on this point it agreed to tag its library files so that the error would not reappear.
