Complainant Name:
Mr Richard Wiggins

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Sunday Telegraph

Mr Richard Wiggins of Essex complained that the newspaper had inaccurately used, in a caption relating to protesters demonstrating in Australia (which is a signatory to the 1951 UN Convention relating to the status of refugees) against its asylum policy, the phrase illegal asylum seeker.

The newspaper, which made clear that the term was used in the context of the Australian quota system which was different to UK policy in the area nonetheless undertook, given that there was no such thing in UK law as an illegal asylum seeker, to ensure that the caption was not republished in future.
