Complainant Name:
Mr Richard Wiggins

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Sunday Telegraph

Complaint:
Mr Richard Wiggins of Essex complained that the newspaper had inaccurately used, in a caption relating to protesters demonstrating in Australia (which is a signatory to the 1951 UN Convention relating to the status of refugees) against its asylum policy, the phrase ‘illegal asylum seeker’.

Resolution:
The newspaper, which made clear that the term was used in the context of the Australian quota system – which was different to UK policy in the area – nonetheless undertook, given that there was no such thing in UK law as an illegal asylum seeker, to ensure that the caption was not republished in future.

Report: 69
