Complaint:
Mr Joe Petersen-Camp of London complained that several articles were inaccurate in their descriptions of individuals who may have been mentally unwell. One in particular referred to a man who potentially was mentally ill as a ‘nut’.

Resolution:
The matter was resolved when the newspaper acknowledged the sensitivities inherent in reporting stories about people who might be mentally unwell. The managing editor reminded staff on the news back bench and news middle bench that the words ‘nut’ and ‘nutter’ were to be avoided in relation to people who are mentally ill.
