Complainant Name:
Mr Rex Gooch

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Times

Complaint:
Mr Rex Gooch of Letchworth Garden City complained that two articles contained inaccuracies with reference to Ted Clarke’s claim to have solved the ten-square word puzzle. The complainant said that he had in fact solved the puzzle, a view that was supported by experts Ross Eckler and Jeff Grant, contrary to the newspaper’s contention that both experts believed that the puzzle had not yet been solved. The complainant further explained that Ted Clarke’s square only contained seven genuine ten-letter words.

Resolution:
The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published a letter from the complainant setting out matters mentioned above. This letter also explained that the complainant had produced what was widely acknowledged to be the best ten-square, and had solved the harder eleven-square challenge.

Report: 72
