Complaint:
Ms Ruth Buchanan of Edinburgh complained that an article describing the day release of a patient from Carstairs State Hospital had used inaccurate and discriminatory terminology such as ‘maniac’, ‘psycho’, ‘monster’ and ‘caged’.

Resolution:
The managing editor of the Sun acknowledged the PCC’s guidance note on reporting mental health issues and took the opportunity to remind the Scottish Editor of the newspaper of its contents. He in turn had assured the managing editor that his staff would refer to it in future.
