Complainant Name:
Embassy of Columbia

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Guardian

Complaint:

Senor Alfonso Lopez, the Colombian Ambassador, complained that the article’s claim, that the father of Colombian President, Alfonso Uribe, was wanted by the US authorities on drug trafficking charges at the time of his death in 1983, was false.

Resolution:
The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published the following clarification: "In “Colombia’s drug untouchables” we said that at the time of his death, President Alvaro Uribe’s father, Alberto, was wanted in the US on drug trafficking charges when he was killed in 1983. We were relying on a confidential Colombian source. The Embassy of Colombia has complained that this allegation is inaccurate, and in response to its request, the US Department of Justice has since searched its records and says that it has found no request for the extradition of Alberto Uribe ever having been made by the US Government".
