Complainant Name:
Detective Superintendent Stephen Heath

Clauses Noted: 1, 2

Publication: Scottish Daily Mail

Complaint:

Detective Superintendent Stephen Heath complained through R S Vaughan & Co Solicitors & Notaries of Glasgow that an article which reported the alleged contents of a precognition statement he had given contained inaccuracies.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published the following clarification:

‘Our article of 27 February headlined “Police Chief urged that print case be paid off and silenced” stated that, as part of precognition papers for the legal case against the Scottish Executive, Detective Superintendent Stephen Heath wished for a “gagging order” to be placed on Ms McKie and that she should be offered “sufficient compensation” in order for the case to be dropped. Mr Heath has asked us to clarify the article by stating that he was never shown the alleged final precognition and he specifically denies making the comments in the manner they were quoted’.
