Complaint:

Ms Karen Croft of the Priory Hospital complained that photographs had appeared on the agency’s website showing patients walking in the hospital’s private grounds. She said that the individual who had taken the photos had entered the hospital grounds covertly and had taken the images without the knowledge of those pictured.

Resolution:

The agency said that the pictures had been taken by a freelance photographer, who was working on his own initiative, and had appeared after a member of the Production Desk staff had a temporary lapse of judgment. They were removed from the agency’s website as soon as contact was made by the Priory and none of the pictures appeared in print or other media. Nonetheless, the agency made clear that they had never assigned or encouraged any photographer to enter the grounds of a hospital to take photos of patients, nor that they could imagine a future scenario in which they would do so, unless there was a compelling public interest justification.
