Complainant Name:
Ms Judith Brown

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Daily Mail

Complaint:

Ms Judith Brown, Director of Arab Media Watch, complained that a Richard Littlejohn column commenting on the situation in the Middle East contained a number of inaccuracies with reference to the role of Hezbollah and the extent of suffering in Lebanon.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published a letter from the complainant addressing her concerns over the article. The letter set out that many humanitarian agencies disagreed that Hezbollah used women and children as ‘human shields’ – as the article had claimed – and indicated that newswires had reported that Hezbollah did not fire rockets during the Israeli ceasefire. The complainant also emphasised in her letter that independent bodies had demonstrated that Arab deaths and suffering were under reported in the media, and indeed that Lebanon had suffered widespread devastation.

Report: 74
