Complainant Name:
Mr Luzio and Mr Baidoo-Hackman

Clauses Noted: 1, 5

Publication: The Sun

Complaint:

Mr Shaun Luzio and Mr Justin Baidoo-Hackman complained on behalf of Mr & Mrs R Mamphey, with their signed authorisation, that an article which reported the death of their son Richard Mamphey contained inaccuracies and intruded into the grief of his family and friends.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published the following correction and apology, in addition to writing privately to Mr & Mrs Mamphey:

‘We would like to make clear that Richard Mamphey, 24, from East London, did not drown in a swimming pool on the Greek island of Kos during a ‘game’ or ‘contest’ and friends had not ‘decided to take it turns to see how long each could spend underwater’ as we reported on September 14 2006. Mr Mamphey, who was not drunk, died due to a heart problem. We apologise to his family and friends for any distress caused’.

Report: 74
