Complainant Name:
Mr Daniel Vuillamy

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Hull Daily Mail

Complaint:

Mr Daniel Vuillamy of Hull complained that an article about Broadmoor Secure Hospital had made a number of inaccurate claims about the nature of prison life and the costs of keeping prisoners. It was not clear – in the complainant’s view – that the article was referring to Broadmoor Secure Hospital, and not to prisons in general.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published the following correction and apology:

‘We have been asked to make clear that a reference to inmates of Broadmoor as prisoners in the Don't Be Daft column of the Mail on Tuesday, January 16, was inaccurate.

Inmates at Broadmoor, which is a secure hospital, not a prison, should be referred to as patients. We would also like to make clear that the article was not referring to prisons in general. We regret the errors and we are happy to set the record straight.’

Report: 74
