Complainant Name:
Mr David Cary

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Chiswick

Complaint:

Mr David Cary of London complained that an article reporting on the proceedings of Zoe Sedgwick’s trial had been misleading. The complainant’s central concern related to the article’s claim that he had made similar accusations against Ms Sidgwick in 2004. In fact, in that year, Ms Sidgwick had been convicted of ABH for breaking the complainant’s jaw.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published the following clarification:

A recent article (Neighbour feud lands in court, 4 November) reported that Zoe Sidgwick of Kingswood Road had been cleared of two charges of robbing and assaulting her neighbour David Cary. In this report we stated that the court heard that Mr Cary had made similar accusations in 2004, when he claimed that Ms Sidgwick had assaulted him and broken his jaw. In fact, it was stated in court that Ms Sidgwick had been previously convicted of ABH for breaking Mr Cary's jaw. This was flagged by police as an ‘unprovoked homophobic attack’. We are happy to make the position clear.
