Ms Janine Watson, the Head of Press for Manchester City Council, complained that the newspaper had inaccurately suggested that the license for the supercasino had been already awarded to Kerzner International.

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published the following letter from the complainant:

We write to clarify the position of Manchester City council and the regional casino (Mail Jan 31).

If Parliament approves the awarding of the licence, Manchester will select an operator by holding a fair competition which conforms to the 2005 Gambling Act and to all relevant Government regulations.

The independent Casino Advisory Panel found we had strong regeneration proposals and the most comprehensive scheme to deal with potential problem gambling. We have plans to set up a Responsible Gambling Unit, a good track record of delivering major projects and are second only to London as a commercial location.

Despite relative economic success in recent years, Manchester remains the third most deprived local authority in the country: it needs regeneration more than any of the other competing candidates.

Subject to Parliamentary approval, we hope to commence the competition process this summer.
