Publication: The Sun

Complaint:

Ms Nuala O’Brien, the Director of Communications for the West London Mental Health NHS Trust, complained that the newspaper had published a leader that inaccurately referred to patients at Broadmoor hospital as “lags”. She also complained that a headline on the website referred to the hospital as a “prison”, and that readers’ responses used similar terms to describe the hospital and its patients.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper removed the offending material from the website, and published the following apology:

"We have been asked to make clear our reference to people detained at Broadmoor Hospital as ‘lags’ (January 15) was inaccurate. Those at the secure hospital are patients and not prisoners. We regret the error”.
