Complainant Name:
Steven Hogg

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Middlesbrough Evening Gazette

Steven Hogg of Middlesbrough complained through solicitors Appleby, Hope and Matthews Solicitors that an article reporting his acquittal from a rape charge would have misled readers to believe that he had somehow escaped justice.

The complainant was resolved when the newspaper published the following clarification:

In a report on March 14 (Rapist Smoked Cigar, Woman Tells Jury) we reported on the start of a trial at Teesside Crown Court in which a woman falsely claimed to be the victim of two serious sexual assaults by Mr Steven Hogg, of Middlesbrough.

Following unreported evidence given by Mr Hogg, and witnesses for the defence, this woman's evidence was totally rejected by the jury. Mr Hogg was found innocent of the charges, as we reported on March 16 (Cheers As Man Is Cleared Of Rape). However, the evidence supporting Mr Hogg's account was not included in this report. We wish to clearly state that any impression that Mr Hogg was fortunate not to have been convicted is totally wrong and there was no intention to create such an impression.
