Complainant Name:
Lieutenant General Sir Freddie Viggers

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Mail on Sunday

Complaint:

Lieutenant General Sir Freddie Viggers complained that the newspaper had published an article that inaccurately claimed he had been blamed for a “military housing crisis” and had ordered a lavish refurbishment of his own accommodation. In fact, the complainant had no responsibility for the delivery of Service Housing and lives in a property owned by the Ministry of Defence, which authorised the money to be spent on necessary repairs.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published the following correction:

“On the 7th May we published an article entitled ‘General blamed for Army “slums” gets a £15,000 home makeover’. We would like to make it clear that the Adjutant General , Lt Gen Sir Freddie Viggers, has not been blamed for any shortcomings in Army housing. The refurbishment of his quarter was ordered by the appropriate MOD authority. We are happy to set the record straight.”
