Complainant Name:
Broadmoor

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The People

Complaint:

Ms Nuala O’Brien, the Director of Communications for the West London Mental Health NHS Trust, complained that the newspaper had used inaccurate terminology to describe Broadmoor hospital, by referring to “guards” and “prison chapel”. She was also concerned that the article referred to the possibility of Peter Sutcliffe getting married in Broadmoor without obtaining a comment from the hospital; in fact, there were no plans for any weddings at Broadmoor.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published the following correction:

“We erred in using the terminology prison chapel and guards when referring to Broadmoor. Broadmoor is in fact a hospital and the staff are nurses”. It also annotated its records to reflect the fact that no weddings were planned at Broadmoor and that the complainant had requested that she be contacted in respect of future stories involving the hospital.

Report: 75
