Complainant Name:
Miss Emily Gelis

Clauses Noted: 1, 3

Publication: Chat

Complaint:

Miss Emily Gelis complained that an article had contained inaccuracies. Most significantly, she was concerned that the first person account had misleadingly implied that she and her boyfriend Barry Edwards had betrayed Hayley Rees – the author of the article – by cheating on her when she had been going out with Barry. The complainant was also concerned that the magazine had published her photograph without permission.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the magazine published the following letter from the complainant:

‘In Brief Encounters (7 June) Hayley Rees wrote abut the break-up of her relationship to Barry Edwards. I feel Hayley’s account misrepresented the situation. I would like to make it clear to Chat readers and Hayley that Barry and I did not cheat on her. I would also like to add that there was no malice intended in me and Barry forming a relationship, just as I imagine Hayley and Chris Barry’s relationship has not been formed on this intent either and I hope they are happy together’.
