Complainant Name:
The Duchess of York

Clauses Noted: 1, 3

Publication: The Mail on Sunday

The Duchess of York complained, through Kate Waddington of Sputnik Communications Ltd, that a series of articles about a holiday in Jamaica were misleading and intrusive. In particular, she was concerned that the articles gave the erroneous impression that she condoned drug taking. She also said that they contained private information and were illustrated by photographs and, online, by a video of her taken in places where she had a reasonable expectation of privacy.

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper wrote privately to the complainant, accepting that she deplored drug-taking, and amended its records to reflect this point, and the others raised in the complaint. It also withdrew the article from circulation and undertook not to republish the video that appeared on its website. Finally, it made a donation to the Teenage Cancer Trust in the Duchess name.
