The Solicitor to the Council complained on behalf of Croydon Council that an article had made a number of inaccurate claims about a draft guidance document issued to schools in Croydon. Crucially, she said that contrary to the coverage the guidance document had not instructed schools to ban crosses.

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published the following correction:

In our article Outrage over new ban on the cross on May 14, we said school chiefs in Croydon, South London were under fire for banning pupils from wearing crosses in class. We would like to make it clear that pupils in Croydon are not being banned from wearing crosses. What was under discussion were draft guidelines circulated to governing bodies with a request for comment. The guidelines suggest it is advisable for schools to have a policy of no jewellery. Only if, and when, approved by the independent body on religious education in the borough, will the guidelines be published, as guidance, not instructions. We apologise to Croydon Council if our report led to a misunderstanding of the issue.
