Kirsten Spencer of County Durham complained that a report detailing the murder of her neighbour contained general inaccuracies and specific inaccuracies regarding the extent to which she had witnessed the attack. Furthermore, she said she made some comments to two men in her living room who she assumed were police. On finding out that they were in fact reporters, she made clear that she did not wish to make any formal comment on the matter and that under no circumstances should her name or comments be published in the newspaper. She was very upset to see that she had been quoted extensively in the article.

The newspaper accepted the complainants concerns whilst seeking to explain that the information had been taken from what it thought was a reliable source. The editor apologised to the complainant and removed the information from its website. She also assured the complainant that her staff had been told to refrain from contacting her in the future and all references to her omitted from future reports.
