Complainant Name:
Mr Bernard Hesford

Clauses Noted: 1, 3, 4, 10

Publication: The People

Mr Bernard Hesford of Cheshire complained that an article which purported to be an interview with him on the subject of his estranged wifes relationship with Chris Tarrant was inaccurate and misleading. The complainant was also concerned that a photograph of him had been taken in a place where he had a reasonable expectation of privacy and that the newspaper had harassed him in addition to taping a conversation with him without consent in breach of Clause 10 (Clandestine devices and subterfuge) of the Code.

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper which removed the article from its website, requested its removal from third party databases, marked its internal records to ensure that the story was not repeated and destroyed the photograph of the complainant sent private letters to members of the complainants family and published the following correction and apology:

On 31 December 2006 we published an article entitled My nagging and scheming wife will run Chris ragged. The article may have given the impression of being an interview with Bernard Hesford, the estranged husband of Carol Williams who was dating Chris Tarrant. We would like to make clear that Mr Hesford did not supply a first person interview nor did he comment directly on the relationship between Ms Williams and Mr Tarrant. In particular, he did not claim that his nagging and scheming wife had run [him] ragged and would now run Chris Tarrant ragged in the same way or that he was shocked and upset when he heard of the relationship. In addition, we published a photograph of Mr Hesford which was taken on private property without his consent. We regret any distress which has been caused to Mr Hesford and his family.
