Complaint:

Jennifer Allen of Sheffield complained about an approach from the newspaper’s reporter following the announcement of her daughter’s death in the newspaper. She said she had told the funeral directors that she did not wish to speak to the press and that the approach was particularly upsetting because the reporter was a similar age to her late daughter and she therefore assumed that she was an acquaintance.

Resolution:

The newspaper sought to explain that, following the publication of the death notice, it contacted the funeral directors and one of the charities mentioned but did not hear anything further from either party. The newspaper therefore sent the reporter on duty at the time to visit the family and, on being told that they did not wish to speak, she apologised and left. The editor said it was unfortunate that the newspaper did not get the family’s message through the funeral directors and apologised for disturbing the complainant at such an emotional time.

The complainant accepted the newspaper’s apology despite believing that the newspaper should have waited for a response from the funeral directors before the reporter made her approach.
