Complainant Name:
Lorraine Russell

Clauses Noted: 1, 3

Publication: South London Press

Complaint:

Lorraine Russell complained on behalf of her brother Leon Russell that a report on his conviction for attempted murder contained inaccuracies – including the claim that he was convicted of possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life – and included the partial address of the family home. She also provided a copy of a right wing blog that had been written about her brother’s case – after the publication of the article – which included the full address of the family home and contained direct threats.

Resolution:

The newspaper made clear that the court had placed no restrictions on the publication of the complainant’s address. However, the newspaper agreed to annotate its records to reflect the complainant’s concerns: that her brother was not convicted of possessing a firearm and that her family had faced serious difficulties after the publication of their address. The complaint was resolved on this basis.

Report: 76
