Complainant Name:
The Rt Hon John Prescott MP

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Daily Mail

Complaint:

The Rt. Hon. John Prescott MP complained that the newspaper had inaccurately suggested that he was “in line for a ‘golden goodbye’ of £33,500” when he ceased to be Deputy Prime Minister.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper, which had used information taken from an earlier article about which there had been no complaint, published the following correction:

“On 11th May we stated that Mr John Prescott was "in line for a 'golden goodbye’ of £33,500" when he ceased to be Deputy Prime Minister. This was due to the possibility that rules might be changed to allow ministers over the age of 65 to receive this severance pay. Mr Prescott has since categorically made clear that he will not be receiving such a payment. We are happy to clarify this”.
