Mr Lawrence Brewer of Worcestershire complained that three articles on immigration contained inaccuracies.

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper – following the complainant’s acceptance that the sub-headline for a 22 August article (‘One in six Eastern Europeans now living off the state’) was qualified in the body of the article by means of the words ‘to some extent’ – published the following letter from the complainant:

“Your 5 July 2007 article of said that the majority of Polish migrants arriving in Britain planned to stay permanently. In fact the survey you quoted said that only 10% wished to settle in Britain. 45% planned to leave within four years, 45% planned to stay at least five years and a researcher’s suggestion that those who stay for more than 5 years are likely to stay for good is conjecture. Following your 17 July article I would like to point out that the number of immigrants to rural England trebled between 2002/3 and 2005/6”.
