Complainant Name:
Dr Damien O'Dwyer

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Guardian

Complaint:

Dr Damien O’Dwyer complained that an article had inaccurately claimed that a medical research paper had found that going to a chiropractor to treat back pain could be a waste of time. The complainant made clear that the study had not referred to chiropractic at all.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published the following clarification:

‘The medical research paper reported in an article headlined Chiropractors may be no use in treating back pain, study says actually made no mention of chiropractors. The study, conducted by the University of Sydney, looked at the effect on acute lower back pain of various treatments, including spinal manipulation – a therapy used by a range of healthcare professionals. In this study the manipulation was given by physiotherapists.’
