Complainant Name:
Mr Gary Coomb and Mr Peter Clackett

Clauses Noted: 1, 5

Publication: Sunday Mirror

Mr Gary Coombs and Mr Peter Clackett, respectively the husband and father of Joanne Coombs, complained that the newspaper had inaccurately reported the circumstances of her Joannes tragic death. They were also concerned about an inaccurate and insensitive comment piece on the subject.

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper, which had relied upon information from a confidential police source, apologised to the complainants and published the following apology:

On September 23, in an article about Joanne Coombs, who sacrificed her life on the railtrack where her teenage daughter, Natasha, had died, we incorrectly reported that Mrs Coombs had wrapped herself in a black bin liner to avoid the train driver spotting her and that she was on 24-hour suicide watch. Mrs Coombs' family have also asked us to point out that no-one in the family knew that she intended to take her own life. We apologise to Joanne Coombs' family for the upset caused.
