Complainant Name:
Ms Helen Abbott

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Sunday Telegraph

Complaint:

Helen Abbott of Goring-on-Thames complained that a response given in the “Question of the day” column of the Money section inaccurately stated that it was too late for a reader to take advantage of the Government’s guarantee over savings held in Northern Rock. The complainant said that the guarantee had in fact been extended to apply to all new depositors.

The complainant also said she had submitted her concerns as a reader’s comment on the article but this had not appeared and that her follow-up email was unanswered.

Resolution:

The newspaper accepted that the point under dispute was inaccurate and it provided the corrections it had published in the following Saturday and Sunday editions of the newspaper and online. The newspaper also apologised that the complainant’s comment was not published online. The editor indicated that he would investigate the means by which readers could flag up inaccuracies and put measures in place to ensure that the service was improved.

The complainant said that, although she felt the newspaper should have published an apology, she was willing to resolve her complaint on the basis of the published corrections.
