Mr Rory Hegarty, Acting Director of Communications for the West London Mental Health NHS Trust, complained that a newspaper article inaccurately referred to Broadmoor as a prison and repeated a claim that it had paid compensation to Peter Sutcliffe.

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published the following apology:

In the Saturday Sport of January 26 we published an article headlined: Ripper So Fat He'll Die. The article referred to a 'prison source' , the 'slammer' and a 'cell', words which we acknowledge suggested that Broadmoor Hospital is a prison. We would like to apologise to the West London Mental Health NHS Trust for our use of this wholly misleading terminology. The article also made reference to a claim made in another newspaper that Peter Sutcliffe had been paid £200, 000 in compensation by Broadmoor Hospital. We now accept that this claim is without any substance and we are happy to clarify that the Hospital has not paid any sum of money in compensation to Sutcliffe.
