Complainant Name:
Mrs Susan Coulbeck

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Times

Complaint:

Mrs Susan Coulbeck complained through Greenwoods Solicitors that two articles which referred to the death of her husband Neil Coulbeck had inaccurately claimed that he killed himself over fears of being extradited to America to face trial over the Enron scandal. The complainant indicated that evidence given at Mr Coulbeck’s inquest had referred only to his fear that he might be ‘dragged into the case’, and that her husband had been told by the FBI before his death that he was not connected to the case.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published the following clarification:

Neil Coulbeck

In our articles on the NatWest Three (May 24 and June 7, 2007), we reported that Neil Coulbeck killed himself over fears of being extradited to the US to stand trial over the Enron scandal. This might have overstated what was said in court which, while talking about the extradition of the NatWest Three, referred only to Mr Coulbeck’s fear of being ‘dragged into the case’. Mr Coulbeck had been told by the FBI before his death that he was ‘in no way connected with the case’. We are happy to clear up any misunderstanding.
