Complainant Name:
Mr Ian Cooper

Clauses Noted: 1, 5

Publication: Daily Mirror

Complaint:

Mr Ian Cooper of Cambridgeshire complained about the newspaperís coverage of his daughterís fall from a hotel balcony and of his wifeís subsequent death. He was particularly concerned that the newspaper had quoted him as saying words he had never said.

Resolution:

The newspaper expressed its sincere condolences for the complainantís loss and apologised for a mistake in reporting where the complainant had made the remarks attributed to him. However, it maintained that he had made the comments in question during a brief conversation with a journalist in a hotel lobby - though not, as reported, as he left the mortuary. Nonetheless, in order to allay the complainantís concerns it agreed to remove the article from its website.

Report: 77
