Complainant Name:
Mr Ian Cooper

Clauses Noted: 1, 5

Publication: Daily Mirror

Mr Ian Cooper of Cambridgeshire complained about the newspapers coverage of his daughters fall from a hotel balcony and of his wifes subsequent death. He was particularly concerned that the newspaper had quoted him as saying words he had never said.

The newspaper expressed its sincere condolences for the complainants loss and apologised for a mistake in reporting where the complainant had made the remarks attributed to him. However, it maintained that he had made the comments in question during a brief conversation with a journalist in a hotel lobby - though not, as reported, as he left the mortuary. Nonetheless, in order to allay the complainants concerns it agreed to remove the article from its website.
