Ms Patricia Brown of Edinburgh complained that an article in the magazine written by the sister of a man who had taken his own life contained too much information about the method of suicide.

The complaint was resolved when the magazine held a meeting of senior editorial staff in which a more stringent compliance procedure was introduced. All relevant staff were then briefed as to the extent and meaning of Clause 5 (ii) of the Code, which deals with the issue of suicide reporting, and instructed to maintain updated versions of the Code. Finally, the issue was to be highlighted at a forthcoming internal legal seminar.
