Complainant Name:
Barry Sheerman MP

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Daily Telegraph

Complaint:

Barry Sheerman, MP for Huddersfield, complained that an article inaccurately stated that he “and his wife had enjoyed a week’s holiday in Thailand after spending £3,000 of taxpayers’ cash to attend a two-day conference organised by the British Council”. In fact, the £3,000 in question had covered only Mr Sheerman’s flights to and from Thailand as well as his accommodation at the conference.

Resolution:

The matter was resolved when the newspaper published the following correction and apology under the heading, Barry Sheerman MP:

“Further to our article ‘MPs spend £1.2m on foreign trips’ (Feb 14), we would like to make clear that the taxpayer did not pay for Mrs Sheerman’s flights or for the couple’s hotel accommodation when they took a holiday in Thailand following Mr Sheerman’s attendance at a conference in Bangkok. We apologise for any misunderstanding.”
