Broadmoor

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: News of the World

Complaint:

Mr Rory Hegarty, Deputy Director of Communications of West London Mental Health NHS Trust, complained that the newspaper had inaccurately claimed that Peter Sutcliffe was one of five people given a drug to tackle diabetes. He was also concerned that the article had repeated erroneous claims that Broadmoor had a “state-of-the-art” medical centre and offered aqua-aerobics.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper annotated its records on the claims about the medical centre and aqua aerobics, removed an article from 2003 which also contained these claims, and published the following correction:

“In our May 5 article "Ripper is Given Miracle Drugs” we stated Broadmoor patient Peter Sutcliffe is one of five people receiving a new drug for diabetes. We now understand the drug is in widespread use”.
