Complainant Name:
UN High Commissioner for Refugees

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Daily Mail

Complaint:

The London Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees complained that articles had used inaccurate terminology when reporting on the issue of refugees and asylum seekers.

Resolution:

The matter was resolved when the newspaper agreed to circulate a leaflet produced by the UNHCR titled ‘Reporting Asylum and Refugee Issues’ to its writers and sub-editors for future guidance. The leaflet gave definitions of terms such as ‘asylum seeker’ ('Anyone who seeks protection claiming they have suffered persecution or fear persecution as described under the 1951 Refugee Convention, and is waiting for a decision') and ‘refugee’ ('a person who has been granted asylum (refugee status) under the 1951 Refugee Convention…').

Report: 77
