Complainant Name:
Mr Ian Cooper

Clauses Noted: 1, 3, 5, 6

Publication: Metro

Mr Ian Cooper of Cambridgeshire complained about the newspaper’s coverage of his daughter’s fall from a hotel balcony and of his wife’s subsequent death. He was particularly concerned that the newspaper had reported his daughter as having ‘severe’ and ‘serious’ head injuries, which was not the case, and had used a picture of his daughter to illustrate its coverage.

The newspaper expressed sympathy for the complainant’s situation. It explained that the information about his daughter’s injuries had been published in good faith. The editor said he would respect the complainant’s request for sensitive coverage of any further developments and confirmed that photographs of the complainant’s daughter would only be re-used if he personally considered there to be a pressing justification.

Report: 77
