Complainant Name:
Mr Robin Knight

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Sunday Times

Complaint:

Mr Robin Knight of London complained that an illustrative caption about the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline used to accompany a Sunday Times Magazine article was inaccurate and misleading.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper agreed to publish the following letter from the complainant:

“The illustrative caption to your article headlined ‘Britain’s dirty business’ (6 April) mentioned the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline and referred to “destruction of wetlands, population displaced, state corruption”. I would like to point out that these allegations were not substantiated in the article itself and have been the subject of long-running disputes with various NGOs and organisations which appear never to have been finally resolved. I personally do not accept that the allegations are correct. It is disappointing that you chose to raise these matters without offering any further clarity or insight”.

In the event, the newspaper inadvertently published an earlier version of the letter. It therefore published the following clarification the next week:

“Last week's letter, entitled Facts in the pipeline, from Mr Robin Knight of London regarding allegations made in a Magazine article headlined Britain’s dirty business (April 6), and mentioning the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, referred to ‘destruction of business, population displaced, state corruption’. The correct wording should, of course, have read: ‘destruction of wetlands, population displaced, state corruption’. We are happy to make this clear”.
