Dougie Paterson, Programme Manager of Choose Life (NHS Health Scotland), complained that an article which reported on the suicide attempt of a young woman in Germany was accompanied by photographs of an unnecessarily graphic nature. He emphasised that there was significant evidence from around the world to show that sensational reporting of suicides with detailed descriptions of the methods used led to copycat suicides.

The newspaper assured the complainant that it took the responsibility of reporting on suicide and attempted suicide very seriously. It emphasised that the story was a newsworthy event which took place in daylight and involved the emergency services. The newspaper pointed to the fact that it had taken care to pixilate the face of the woman who had attempted suicide and had omitted to include any detailed description of the method she had used.

The complainant decided not to pursue his concerns further than this but asked that a summary of his complaint be published on the PCC website.
