Mr Nigel Jordan, a senior civil servant, complained through Russell Jones and Walker that a newspaper article on the subject of data loss by HMRC inaccurately suggested that he was aware of the decision to send the entire child benefits database to London in March 2007.

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published the following apology:

Further to our article, More bad news in the post (Nov 25) about HMRC losing a copy of the entire child benefits database, the recent Poynter Review accepted that Nigel Jordan, the senior civil servant responsible for Child Benefit policy, was not aware of the decision to send the entire database to London. Although he was copied into an email exchange on the subject of data transference, this did not include reference to a plan for the entire database to leave HRMC's offices. Our report may have appeared to suggest otherwise, for which we apologise.
