Complainant Name:
Mr Jim Reyner

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Sunday Times

Complaint:

Mr Jim Reyner, Quality Improvement Manager at SIC Schools Services, complained that an article had inaccurately claimed that that free condoms had been handed out to pupils at Sandwick Junior High School in Shetland under a one year pilot scheme. He made clear that the school had an established drop-in centre, which included advice from appropriate professionals on sexual health. This did not extend to encouraging underage sex, as claimed in the headline.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published a clarification in the following terms:

Following clarification from representatives of Shetland Islands Council, The Sunday Times is happy to acknowledge that Sandwick Junior High School, in common with other Shetland schools, does not issue condoms to pupils. That remains within the remit of appropriate health professionals who work in a weekly drop-in centre at the school.
