Complainant Name:
Carol Colins

Clauses Noted: 5

Publication: Sunday Mirror

Complaint:

Carol Colins, a friend of Shaun Dykes’ family, complained (with the permission of his mother) that an article reporting on his suicide was accompanied by a photograph of Shaun in a state of despair shortly before he jumped from a building. The complainant made clear that she was very happy with the content of the article which expressed horror at the abuse Shaun had received from members of the crowd.

Resolution:

The newspaper apologised to the complainant for the distress caused by the publication of the photograph and offered its sincere sympathies. It made clear, however, that the incident was witnessed by a number of people and the photograph – obtained from an agency – illustrated the human tragedy behind the story. Another newspaper which carried the photograph was able to confirm that no-one in the jeering crowd benefitted from the photograph.

The complainant said she and Shaun’s family appreciated the newspaper’s apology and were willing to conclude the matter on that basis.

Report: 78
