Complainant Name:
Leeds Asylum Seekers' Support Network

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Daily Telegraph

Complaint:

Mr Peter Richardson, Manager of the Leeds Asylum Seekers’ Support Network, complained that an article of 10 December – which stated that 180,000 “legacy” asylum seekers were set to remain in the UK – was inaccurate and misleading. In particular, he argued that the article had misleadingly combined two separate issues (the so-called “legacy” files and the foreign prisoner scandal) and had inaccurately stated that “just 10 per cent of asylum claims are granted in the first instance” when the actual figure was 31%.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper removed the online version of the article from its website, in addition to appending a note to its archives.

Report: 78
