Complainant Name:
Mr James O'Mahoney

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: Evening Standard

Complaint:

Mr James O’Mahony, of the British Association of Aesthetic Nurses, complained that an article was inaccurate in suggesting that only doctors could prescribe Botox. He said it was also wrong to suggest that so-called ‘remote prescription’ was prohibited.

Resolution:

The matter was resolved when the newspaper published the following letter from the complainant:

On 9 December last year you reported that Botox is a prescription drug which ‘can only be issued by a doctor’. This is wrong. Actually, dentists and (since 1st May 2006) Independent Nurse Prescribers are also permitted to prescribe Botox. Moreover, while I would not call it good practice, 'remote prescription' (where a doctor does not asses individual patients) is also still permissible, contrary to the impression given in the article.
