Complainant Name:
Dr John Bond

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Guardian

Complaint:

Dr John Bond of Hampshire complained that an illustration accompanying an article in the newspaper was incorrectly identified as showing gas being flared off at an oil refinery, when it actually showed water vapour rising from cooling towers.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the newspaper agreed to correct the description of the picture in its electronic library and to publish the following clarification:

The caption to a photograph of Grangemouth oil refinery, which appeared across pages 18 and 19 of the main paper on November 27, wrongly referred to ‘gas being flared off’. In fact, the photo was dominated by three cooling towers, which emit only water vapour, and a number of distillation columns.

Report: 78
