Complainant Name:
Mr Hugh Parker

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Daily Telegraph

Complaint:

Mr Hugh Parker of Birmingham complained than an article which had appeared on www.telegraph.co.uk was inaccurate in reporting a scientific study into the earth’s atmospheric conditions during a previous ice age. The study, carried out by researchers at Birmingham University, had found that 630 million years ago the earth had a warm atmosphere full of carbon dioxide but was completely covered with ice. The article, however, reported in its headline that researchers had found that ‘greenhouse gases could have caused an ice age’ and that ‘filling the atmosphere with greenhouse gases associated with global warming could push the planet into a new ice age’. The complainant said this was an inaccurate interpretation of the study.

Resolution:

The newspaper said it had taken steps to amend the headline and sub-heading. It had also published an online comment from the lead researcher, Professor Ian Fairchild, which clarified the study’s results. The matter was resolved on that basis.
