Complainant Name:
George Galloway

Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Sun

Complaint:

Mr George Galloway, MP for Bethnal Green and Bow, complained that the newspaper had reported that some of the Mumbai terrorists were British Pakistanis from Bradford or Leeds, despite the rejection – on the same day – of any such claims by the British government.

Resolution:

The newspaper detailed its position that the coverage had made clear that it was a claim – rather than a proven fact – that the terrorists were British. It pointed out that subsequent coverage had included the Foreign Office’s position that there was no evidence of a link between the terrorists and the UK. Moreover, the online coverage had been amended to remove references to possible connections to Leeds and Bradford. The newspaper also published a further article, specifically pointing out that no British terrorists were among the gunmen. The complainant accepted this explanation and action as a resolution to his complaint.

Report: 78
